Two-day workshop Blue Ocean Strategy

The Blue Ocean Strategy is a method to create new market space and thereby making the competition irrelevant. It is based on the international bestseller, written by Professors W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne from the INSEAD business school.

Many companies are battling for success in a bloody 'red ocean', where there is fierce competition and where prices are driven lower. By exploring and creating new market places, where there is no competition (blue ocean), your company will make the competition irrelevant and will you be able to set your company into a long-term market leader position.

In our two Blue Ocean Strategy workshop we lead your team through a step-by-step process to identify blue oceans. The following three aspects are crucial:

  • Defining the drivers of customers. Which aspects for product, price and distribution affect the decisions that customers make?
  • Defining your proposition, or choosing the right parameters within these drivers. How do we combine differentiation with the right price?
  • Making a concrete action plan to enable your team to work with the results, directly after the workshop.

Escape from the bloody red ocean and dive into your refreshing blue ocean!

The way we work - preparation

The success of a good brainstorm session lies in a good preparation. Based on intake meetings with the client's project owner and with some of the team members we clearly define the objectives and the desired results of the workshop.

These intake meetings also allow us to collect relevant information for the team to build on during the session. Examples of relevant information can be results from qualitative market research, market statistics, trends and current strategies, etc.

The way we work - workshop

In our two-day Blue Ocean Strategy workshop your team follows a step-by-step process to identify the drivers of customers. This team effort will be based on existing market research and on knowledge and experience of the team members.

On the second day we will open up the present thinking boundaries and structures and inspire your team to identify new opportunities. The team defines new propositions that will be based on these opportunities and on drivers of customers. We finalise the workshop by defining a concrete action plan.

In the Blue Ocean Strategy workshop we use tangible innovation tools. Some of these tools are directly based on the Blue Ocean theory, while others have been developed by SunIdee. Below you will find some examples:

Value chain

For successful innovation it is important to widen the scope from your own organisation to all stakeholders in the value chain. This proves to be a valuable exercise, especially for companies in a B2B environment.
All the stakeholders in the value chain are analysed in a structured manner. This approach illustrates how different stakeholders have very different perspectives on the product. To be able to add value it is essential to analyse and understand these differences.

Value Proposition Model

The Value Proposition Model is a good way of clarifying and defining the competitive advantage of your product portfolio. By making an overview of your own products vs. those of the competition, you will gain insight in your proposition based on relevant drivers. These relevant drivers can be linked directly to the customer’s motivations in the selection process and purchasing process. The Value Proposition Model is based on the Blue Ocean Strategy theory.

Action plan

Using SunIdee's action planning tool, the team agrees on actions, deliverables and responsibilities for every workstream, while clearly linking these to clear business objectives. The dependencies between actions and the critical path are identified and milestones, risks and decisions are set.

This tangible and visual tool for creating action plans creates an effective and efficient working environment for multidisciplinary teams where team members develop commitment towards a shared goal.

Magic wall

The MagicWall consists of two large magnetic walls and an enormous amount of magnets, enabling you to build an extensive overview of ideas, results, opinions, action points, insights and other relevant information.

By helping to visualise the bigger picture, it supports the decisions making process and developing action plans; perfect for Blue Ocean Strategy workshops.

Our tools enable dynamic interaction between the participants and help them to overcome cultural differences and language barriers. This make the Blue Ocean Strategy workshop also very suitable for international teams who work at different locations.

Within one week after the workshop you will receive our report with a detailed overview of the results and action plan.
